Youth

The committee is about creating space for young people within the local to develop confidence, skills and knowledge to participate in union life and play a role in building our local union. It provide a "home base" from which young workers can build the confidence and skills necessary to become active in the local union standing committees, attend general union meetings, write union newsletter articles, develop relationships with the leadership and other union activists, communicate the importance of unions to students, and to work with other progressive organizations in the community to bring about peace, social justice and a healthy, sustainable environment and, more generally, to improve the lives of working people.

It’s Time for Action! Unifor’s Young Workers’ Conference July 8-10, 2016

It was the second Unifor Young Workers’ Conference, held at the beautiful Family Education Centre in Port Elgin. There were 130 delegates from across the country that attended this conference.

Saturday morning was filled with information needed to understand some of this year’s important issues, which include; The TPP, The Gender Wage Gap, The ‘Sharing’ Economy and a Tale of Austerity.

Saturday afternoon there was a series of skill-building workshops which included Campaigning Skills, Blogging and Photography. These workshops taught us how to use these skills to be a more effective at getting our message across and being an activist. There was also an afternoon group of panelists that equipped us with tools and skill to fulfill our role as activists in our workplace, union and communities. The panel discussed One-on-One Conversations, Sharing Stories that make our Movement Strong and Social Media for the Greater Good.

Sunday morning was Alia Karim who is the current organizer for the Fight for $15 and Fairness Campaign. She spoke to us about the campaign and how we can get involved with our communities.

Over all this was a very action packed weekend, that gave Young Workers the tools needed to become involved, how to be effective and networking with each other to strategize and inspire to bring these skills back home!
