Women's Committee

The annual Women's conference was held in Port Elgin from Aug 14-17, 2016.  A total of 17 women were sent to represent local 1106 and here's what some had to say:

Another amazing women's conference! Local 1106 sent 17 women to this years conference - definitely the largest delegation from any local.

I was inspired by the panel discussions and learned so much in the classroom sessions. I attended the classes on lobbying and the gender wage gap It has helped me prepare to lobby our MPP on September8th on the upcoming Labour law reforms
Thanks for the sisterhood!

Having the opportunity to attend another Women's Conference was an honor once again. It was great to room with one of our original healthcare 1106 sisters. We had a great time getting to know each other and share positives & negatives of our workplaces. The workshop "Changing the Wage Gap" was most interesting , we had a full class , hearing about other sisters issues and working together in teams to do skits representing the struggles and solutions for the wage gap was helpful, fun & very engaging. Looking Forward to Attending Next in 2017.

I attended the Women’s Conference in Port Elgin, it was my first time. I was inspired by how many strong women we have in our union. I found this conference was excellent with the stories and the accomplishments that many of the women shared. Seeing Jerry Dias there and speak with compassion about the obstacles women face in the workplace and the changes that are happening for equality. I am happy that I attended and look forward to going again.

I was fortunate to be nominated to go to the women's conference this year. I learned so much from the panel discussions, the classes and the literature given. I learned a lot from the other women that were there from all across Canada.
I know going forward that I will use what I learned in my place of work , and my personal life. It inspired me to become more active in my Union.

I had my first experience at The Woman’s Committee. To hear their fights and battles over the years was amazing. Once you heard their stories, your heart was pulled in all directions. When you heard their WINS to improve the work places and the LAWS. The applaud, standing ovation, just did not seem enough. It is a shame that less Women will be attending in 2017. The children of lots of our STRONG MOTHERS, put together a short film. Seeing those young people proud of their Mothers. You will cherish forever. I would like to thank 1106, for sending us and my company for letting us go.

GOD BLESS ALL YOU STRONG WOMEN. You made a stronger once again.

I went to my first woman's Conference in Port Elgin Aug 7-10. This experience gave me the opportunity to with meet and connect with women from Unifor. I learned regardless of what our job may be or position we all have the same struggle, in gaining equality in the work place and in our communities.

Upon leaving the convention I was inspired and more determined to become more involved in the fight for women's issues.

I attended Unifor’s Women’s Conference, held in Port Elgin. It was an amazing conference where we heard from many powerful women from our union. Discussion Panels about Political Action, Gains through Collective Bargaining, and strengthening our union.  Important topics and courses were; equality, the gender wage gap, retiring, lobbying, CPP expansion, new Heath Accord, pharmacare, paid leave for Domestic Violence in Manitoba. The weekend came to a close with amazing closing remarks from Lisa Kelly! I had a wonderful time, thank you for allowing me such a great opportunity to attend!
